Damen Shipyards explains it during ESEF Maakindustrie 2022
On Sept. 2, during ESEF Maakindustrie in the Royal Jaarbeurs Utrecht, Dewi Wesselman, Group Sustainability Coordinator of Damen Shipyards Group, will hold an inspiring session on sustainable entrepreneurship in her industry. She talks about Damen's ambition to become the world's most sustainable shipbuilder in the future. During her session, she discusses the challenges involved - with the biggest challenge being the design and construction of a 100% circular ferry by 2025. Just how feasible is that?[/column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][column_text]Wesselman, who has a background in Strategic Product Design and Communication Design for Innovation at TU Delft, has been working for Damen Shipyards Group since 2017. She deals with circularity and thinks about the complete life cycle of a ship. She works about 3 days a week on the realization of this project to design and build a 100% circular ferry by 2025. 'It's a Big Hairy Audacious goal,' she says. 'We secretly get slightly nervous about it, too. But so is the goal of our sustainable ambition. It's time to create urgency
and take action. We need to walk the talk."[/column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][column_text]
Not yet an answer to everything
During her session, Wesselman elaborates on the process of designing and building a circular ferry. She talks about good circular solutions that a lot is already known about, such as the interior.
But she also gives an open view of the challenges they face: 'For example, the batteries,' she says. 'Both input and output are currently not circular. Making a battery circular is a huge challenge on a technical level. We are exploring what is
needed. Or at all, how we can get the whole chain on board in our journey. After all, it is something we have to do together."[/column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][column_text]
Sharing knowledge and exchanging experience
Wesselman also enjoys connecting with other peers. 'At Damen, we are always looking for great collaborations or insights. We find it interesting to get input from other industries. I talk about the process we are in, we are far from there.
This is an open invitation to get acquainted and exchange ideas.'
Wesselman will hold her session on September 2 at from 1:45 to 2:14 p.m. in the innovation theater at ESEF Maakindustrie.[/column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][column_text]ESEF Maakindustrie will take place from August 30 to September 2 at Jaarbeurs Utrecht.
